29 April – 4 July 2010

The exhibition will feature wedding customs and ceremonies typical of rural and city culture in Upper-Silesia during the 19th  and 20th century. The subject  will be widely covered: from the moment  a young couple meets, through  an engagement, wedding and  reception, the moving of  newly-weds to a new home, and to celebrations of subsequent wedding anniversaries- silver and gold.

We will be able to observe the wedding fashion changing over the years in the city, the continuity of peasant’s fashion trends and some requisites connected with  symbolic magical moments of a traditional wedding such as: polterbend, wedding ‘gates’, greeting a young couple with bread and salt and a capping ceremony. We will also present items which constituted  a village girl’s dowry and that of a rich city girl.
