To go on a pilgrimage means to make a journey to a sacred
site for the purposes of religious worship, thanksgiving or praying for God's
grace. Pilgrimages are almost as old as mankind. Apart from their religious
dimension, they have played a role in expanding human experience. Pilgrimages
enabled the pilgrims to familiarize themselves with new environments, new
customs, new regions and places, which facilitated broadening of interests.
The exhibition will present the pilgrimage destinations that have
been chosen by Silesians, including the largest sanctuaries such as Jerusalem,
Rome, Santiago de Compostela, Cęstochowa, Kalwaria Zebrzydowska, Mount St. Ann,
Piekary Sląskie as well as local shrines. We will see numerous relics connected
with pilgrimages: holy paintings, panoramas of monasteries and shrines,
documents, publications (prayer books, songbooks, kalwaryjki [Calvary prayer
books], devotional articles such as rosaries, crucifixes, holy medals, plaques,
statues of saints), souvenirs. The exhibition aims to present the spiritual,
historical and moral dimension of pilgrimages, both today and in the past.
The exhibition will be accompanied by concerts and lectures.
