Centre for Polish Scenography
does not have its equivalent within Polish museum history. According to
the original concept, the ambition of this institution is to encompass all
achievements related to stage design as museum exhibits in a creative and
documentary manner. Hence came the idea of the Centre – a synonym of the only
place in Poland, which registers the major accomplishments of Polish stage
designers working for theatres, theatre-like spectacles, and in the future –
animated film and TV theatre.
The Centre was formally established
in July 1991 as a branch of the Silesian Museum in Katowice, and as
it is recorded in the statute ‘... the Centre is headquartered in Katowice but
its scope spreads over the whole country. The Centre in an institution
specialising in collecting, storing and researching stage design works in all
sorts of artistic forms’.
Since 1993 the Centre has been located on the first floor
and GCK in Katowice, pl. Sejmu Śląskiego 2.
It has amassed about 15,000
projects and costumes, stage props, mock-ups and puppets made by famous Polish
stage designers. Around 90 per cent of items are gifts from artists and
theatres. The collection of the Centre has been presented at exhibitions both in
this country and abroad.
The
most remarkable authors of the Polish theatre art include: J. Szajna, A.
Sadowiski, A. Kreutz-Majewski, K. Wiśniak, J. Polwka. They had their anniversary
exhibitions here. The director of the Centre between 1991 and 2005 was Jerzy
Moskal.
