World Stage Design is a festival presenting trends in contemporary scenography, costumography and architecture of the theatre. It is held every four years in different cities - previously in Toronto (2005) and Seoul (2009). This year an international group of artists, researchers and spectators met in Cardiff (United Kingdom) from 5 to 15 September 2013.
The meeting aims to outline the objectives of the festival and to discuss its major events, with particular emphasis on the exhibition presenting the most interesting theatrical projects of participants from over 30 countries. The meeting will be moderated by the two participants of the Welsh festival: dr Katarzyna Zawistowska (Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk) and Martyna Groth (PhD student at the University of Gdańsk), who deal with scenography, both in theory and practice.

    Gallery Theatre
    - attempt at reconstruction - moderated by Martyna Groth - PhD student at the University of Gdansk
Gallery Theatre is an initiative of the students of the State Institute of Fine Arts in Gdańsk (now Academy of Fine Arts) in the early sixties of the last century. The Theatre was created by - at different times – painters: Andrzej Dyakowski , Adam Haras , Jacek John, Wanda Kamińska, Monika Krechowicz, Hugon Lasecki, Ryszard Patzer, Zbigniew Ralicki, Władyslaw Wasilewski, Piotr Wieczorek; musicians: Janusz Hajdun and Andrzej Barczyński. Under the direction of founder and leader of the group - Jerzy Krechowicz – the artists sought to materialize the idea of a theatre of moving paintings Inspired by, above all, experiences of film, photography, painting, music and theatre, they finally created an experimental audiovisual laboratory. A small amount of preserved iconographic material, a lack of monographs and a time gap of nearly fifty years meant that the group’s avant-garde activity has been almost forgotten. The lecture will remind the ideas of the five programmes of the Gallery: The Penal Colony (1961), Dog, and the lack of a dog (1963), Termite mound (1964), Treatise (1966 ) and Invasion (1967).

The lecture has been made possible by the cultural scholarship of the Mayor of Gdańsk, by the scholarship for artists awarded by the Marshal of the Pomorskie region and the grant programme of the Soroptimist International organization.
