This unique exhibition presents serigraphs by Andy Warhol.
The graphic works on display depict the Chinese communist leader Mao Tse-Tung in
different colour variations. They are part of the famous series of stylised
portraits of world celebrities; film stars, artists, politicians (pictures of
Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, Marlon Brando, Elisabeth Taylor, Jacqueline
Onassis, an artist Joseph Beuys and well-known political leaders such as: Lenin
and Mao Tse-Tung). The portraits were created in 1972, at the time when the
reputation of Andy Warhol was becoming established. The connections and
cooperation with young and talented artists at that time not only brought Andy
Warhol fame, financial benefits, but also a wave of accusations about using
those young gifted artists to build up his own career. The exhibition has been
organised thanks to the Van Abbemuseum, from which Warhol’s serigraphs are
on loan.
In August 2009 the Van Abbemuseum located in the Dutch city
of Eindhoven, asked the Silesian Museum in Katowice to loan a painting by
Andrzej Wróblewski ‘Grey Geometrical Abstraction’ for the artist’s exhibition
organised in Holland. In exchange, Van Abbenmuseum offered to loan works from
its own collection. Among their works three serigraphs by Andy Warhol were
selected
